Finding Solutions for Recruitment and Retention in Moree.

In Moree, a gathering of local business leaders and HR professionals tackled one of the region’s biggest challenges: recruitment and retention. With support from the Federal Government Murray–Darling Basin Economic Development Program and the NSW Government Accelerating Regional Innovation Fund, the event saw insightful discussions led by industry experts and local employers on 18 December 2023.

Zara Tonkin, Chief of Staff for Employment Hero, Australia’s largest cloud-based HR and payroll platform, spearheaded the conversation. Tonkin shared valuable research highlighting what attracts job seekers, such as competitive pay and convenient locations. She stressed the importance of transparency in the recruitment process, advising employers to clearly communicate job expectations, salary, and leave policies.

Tonkin also emphasised the need for a strong onboarding process, effective performance management, employee reward programs, and opportunities for promotion or pay raises to ensure new employees succeed.

James Von Drenhen of Tyre Power Moree contributed practical tips from his experience, advocating for a hands-on approach to understanding and developing employees' skills. He suggested implementing a three-month trial period to find the right fit, noting that sometimes hiring multiple candidates is necessary to retain one.

Although Antionette McNamara of Gwydir Industries couldn’t attend, her tips were shared with attendees. She recommended avoiding micromanagement, conducting regular confidential surveys to gauge staff satisfaction, and providing an anonymous comment box for employees to voice concerns.

Adam Love, a long-term employee of Gwydir Industries, shared why he has stayed with the company for over 20 years. He praised McNamara’s proactive management style, highlighting her support during stressful times and recognition of staff efforts.

Representatives from various organisations, including Moree Plains Shire Council, Best Employment, Flat Track, BMC Partnership, and McGregor Gourlay, attended the session and actively engaged in discussions. They shared their experiences and highlighted effective recruitment platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

The potential of AI to streamline administrative tasks and allow employers to focus on employee development was also discussed.

Other suggestions included the benefits of sponsorship, partner employment initiatives, and effective delegation to enhance workforce satisfaction and retention. However, attendees also identified significant challenges, such as the lack of housing and rising business costs, which continue to hinder recruitment and retention efforts.

The event concluded with a consensus on the need for ongoing discussions and additional sessions to tackle these multifaceted challenges. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a stable and motivated workforce in the region.

This event was made possible through the funding and support of the Federal Government Murray–Darling Basin Economic Development Program and the NSW Government Accelerating Regional Innovation Fund, in association with Moree Plains Shire Council. Their commitment to addressing workforce challenges is helping to build stronger, more resilient communities.
