Hatch

Have you been playing around with a business idea but don’t know how to get the ball rolling? Maybe want to add a new product or service to your current business but aren’t sure if it’ll fly or flop?

HATCH is the UNE SMART Region Incubator’s free flagship program for your new business ideas. It provides you with confidence and support to get your business, product or service off and running. Using Lean Canvas principles, you’ll test your ideas, identify your path to market, articulate the must-do steps along the way and understand how to pitch your ideas and products.

  • Hatch is ideal for early stage founders, side-hustlers and anyone looking to turn their business idea into reality, regardless of entrepreneurial experience.

  • Hatch is offered regularly throughout the year across the New England North West region, including Armidale, Tamworth, Moree and Narrabri. Check out our events page.

  • Identify your customers, learn to solve your customers’ problems, develop messaging and marketing skills, cost analysis, IP knowledge and pitch training.

  • This program is offered at no cost to participants.

  • Contact the UNE SRI team on 0482 949 684 or email

At the end of HATCH you will be able to identify your customers, where they are and what an ideal customer ‘looks’ like.

Outcomes and opportunities

Turn your business idea into a one-page Lean Canvas and see how your idea can take shape. The Lean Canvas allows you to visualize your business plan and break-it down into do-able steps and see how your idea can take shape. At the end of HATCH you will be able to identify:

  • Your customers, where they are and what an ideal customer ‘looks’ like

  • The problems you solve for your customers

  • Your Unique Value Proposition, the single clear compelling message for your business

  • The solutions you offer to solve your customers problems

  • The channels to get your message out there, your path to reaching your customers

  • Revenue that your solution could generate

  • Costs that are fixed, variable or scaling

  • Metrics that tell you how your business is doing

  • Your unfair advantage so that what you do can’t be easily copied or bought.

Once you have completed the one-pager, you will be learning the valuable skill of turning it into a short story, also known as the elevator pitch. Having a compelling pitch is essential to sell the story and inspire customers of your business. Moreover, pitching and public speaking is a skill that can be used in many facets of life.

Finally, HATCH ends with a fun, relaxed pitch and networking event.

This friendly, flexible approach meets you where you’re at, and supports you on your startup journey. Along the way, you’re also exposed to a community of startups where you’ll find inspiration and confidence, like-minds to share with and learn from, and a whole community of ongoing support.
