EMERGE
Turning research into real-world impact
EMERGE is a specialist program for UNE researchers, students and staff who want to explore the potential impact of their work beyond academia. It’s designed for people who are curious about where their research could lead, and who want support to understand possible commercial, social or community pathways.
Delivered by the UNE SMART Region Incubator, EMERGE sits between research and application. It provides a structured way to test ideas, explore relevance and consider next steps with guidance from people experienced in research translation.
From research to application
The path from research to impact is rarely straightforward. EMERGE helps participants explore that path thoughtfully, working through questions of value, feasibility and use in the real world.
Through interactive workshops, participants consider intellectual property, impact models, potential users or beneficiaries, and early funding or commercial options. The focus is on clarity and informed decision-making, not pressure to commercialise.
EMERGE is delivered in partnership with Crux Innovations, strengthening the connection between research insight and practical pathways.

What is the value of research, including the fundamentals of raising capital and other funding strategies for science-based businesses
Complete a market research and understand your ideal customer
EMERGE reflects the close working relationship between the UNE SMART Region Incubator and the University of New England. It plays a key role in connecting research capability with real-world application, and in strengthening pathways between ideas, evidence and impact.
At the end of the program, you should walk away with an understanding of how you can identify and protect the IP that is key to your research, the business models that are most suitable for commercializing your research, and the funding strategies to get your idea off the ground.
The path to achieving impact with research is never straight forward. We are here to support you in understanding the possibilities and processes that connect research outcomes to the generation of impact and commercial opportunity.
