Transforming livestock management
Stoktake aims to provide a low-cost, integrated, secure, high-accuracy assurance, traceability, and verification livestock platform accessible to everyone, using AI-powered livestock image recognition, integration and management.
Whilst in some sectors, the adage “this is the way we’ve always done things” often prevails, in livestock management and Australian agriculture, our producers are accustomed to innovating to drive efficiency.
Despite Australia’s record as one of the best agricultural environments globally, there’s a tendency to take this advantage for granted.
This recognition that Australia could be a world leader in the livestock management space inspired Dr Phillip Zada to start Stoktake. He aims to revolutionise livestock management by setting a new standard for a connected livestock ecosystem.
Addressing a real problem with a revolutionary approach
Stoktake tackles several critical issues in livestock management, including inaccurate tracking and verification of animal identities, the invasiveness and unreliability of traditional tagging and branding methods, and the inefficiencies in data management.
Stoktake’s core product is revolutionary facial recognition technology. Much in the same way that no two fingerprints are the same, no two muzzles are the same - they’re unique to each animal.
The platform offers an advanced, non-invasive, humane alternative to traditional ear tagging and branding methods. Accessible via any smart device, this third-generation technology ensures precise animal identification and seamless data management across the entire livestock supply chain.
Stoktake’s unique approach to distinguishing between animals, even those of similar breeds and siblings, sets a new standard in the field. Compared to traditional identification methods, it reduces stress and potential harm to livestock, ensuring high accuracy and reliability.
The identification accuracy of Stoktake is nearly perfect, with a rate of 99.65% and above
Stoktake’s platform also integrates seamlessly with existing systems, making the transition from old methods to this advanced technology smooth and efficient.
A solution grounded in research, backed by real need
Phillip’s extensive education and experience have been instrumental in addressing the long-standing need for a better solution in farming practices, while research played a pivotal role in bringing Stoktake to life.
With a PhD and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of New England (UNE), Phillip’s deep understanding of technology and its potential to transform industries has been instrumental in shaping the vision for Stoktake. Early research in muzzle recognition at UNE provided the impetus to take this idea into commercial reality. Working also with the UNE Centre for Rural Criminology has provided significant research backing for the startup, further validating the need for the solution.
Since starting the business, Phillip has been keen to highlight how the support and community of the UNE SRI have helped Stoktake from an innovative idea into a market-ready solution.
“The support from SRI is fantastic! Lou Conway goes above and beyond and never had a day of regret joining the program.”
The company’s regional location has proven to be an advantage as it allows for close proximity to its end users. This has facilitated regular feedback and consultation, which has been integral to the development of Stoktake’s technology.
The identification accuracy of Stoktake is nearly perfect, with a rate of 99.65% and above. This accuracy has been achieved through significant trial and testing, solidifying its reputation as a trusted and reliable solution.
The company is on track to develop a global presence, having started to establish partnerships globally. Stoktake has also been recognised as a finalist in prestigious industry awards such as the AIIA, Council, and ARN Awards. In May 2024, Stoktake won The Startup Network’s ClimateTech and AgTech Pitch Night.
These achievements position Stoktake as a true innovator and industry leader, indicating its potential for long-term, national and international success.
“Don’t leave it too late; UNE SRI is an invaluable ally.”
Looking ahead, Stoktake plans to develop the next generation of its technology and establish a global presence. Phillip’s advice for future entrepreneurs is simple: “Don’t leave it too late; UNE SRI is an invaluable ally.”
